“When the composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe founded the Bang on a Can collective 16 years ago, they wanted to turn classical music upside down: casual dress onstage, audiences that come and go during a performance, and music that throbs with the pulse of rock.

”We’re used to going in and sitting down and watching people play music,” said Mr. Gordon, a soft-spoken man of 47. ”We’ve always been able to imagine, ‘What is the concert of the future?’ ”
