“Before the last piece in the Bang on a Can Marathon at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday, Michael Gordon, a founder of the new-music festival, asked who in the audience had been there for the full eight hours. The hall was nearly two-thirds full, and well over half the listeners raised their hands. Mr. Gordon then asked how many listeners had attended the marathon in its early days, downtown. Fewer than a dozen hands were raised.”
